On the quiet shift of authority in e-commerce discourse. When operational mishaps become public performances and visibility trumps responsibility.
Notes from the Digital Floor 2
The Screenshot and the New Public Sphere
Digital commerce has created its own public sphere. It operates by different rules than commerce itself.
Where operational mishaps were once resolved internally, they now surface as screenshots in the feed. An abandoned checkout, a clumsily worded customer service reply, a stock indicator bearing no relation to reality. And so the ritual begins. The commentary is rarely loud, more often ironic, occasionally patronising. The audience responds reliably. Everyone knows everyone. Everyone recognises the codes.
What is interesting here is less the specific incident than the role of the observer. In this new arena, authority is earned through distance. Those who comment need not operate. Those who analyse bear no operational risk. Between wit and audience, a form of sovereignty emerges that derives not from responsibility but from visibility.
In parallel, stages and podcasts fill with a different variant of the same dramaturgy. Speech is accelerated, often with an existential register. Transformation appears as a permanent state, artificial intelligence as acceleration without alternative. Urgency sounds better than differentiation. Complexity is compressed until it becomes quotable.
What stands out in both cases is a remarkable reluctance to engage with structural questions. Hardly anyone discusses integration architecture, inventory logic, or the tension between shop-floor reality and system promises. Rarer still is any discussion of the organisational maturity required for technological promises to become viable in the first place. The sober topics seldom play well with an audience.
Commerce itself knows this sobriety. It lives on margins, timing, reliability and trust. A functioning system architecture is unspectacular. It generates neither outrage nor euphoria. It merely reduces irritations before they become visible.
Perhaps that is precisely the difference between discourse and craft. One thrives on attention, the other on consistency. A screenshot is taken in seconds. A clean integration logic takes rather longer to build and mostly remains invisible.
One rather hopes they might find their way back to each other.
